Breathy voice
Breathy voice, denoted by ◌ʱ in the International Phonetic Alphabet,
is a combination of voicing and aspiration that resembles a sigh.
Phonologically contrastive occurrence
- Indo-Aryan languages — four-way contrast in plosives and affricates
- Nguni languages — the Xhosa language, for example, has a four-way distinction for oral clicks and a three-way distinction for plosives.
