Maxwell's equations in materials

Electric displacement

The electric displacement is an auxiliary field defined as

โƒ—๐ƒ=๐œ–0โƒ—๐„+โƒ—๐

where โƒ—๐„ is the electric field and โƒ—๐ is the electric polarization density. โƒ—๐ƒ satisfies GauรŸ's law for diรซlectrics which is analogous to GauรŸ's law satisfied by โƒ—๐„, however unlike โƒ—๐„ its curl does not in general vanish (โƒ—โˆ‡ ร—โƒ—๐ƒ =โƒ—โˆ‡ ร—โƒ—๐).

Linear media

In the special case of a Linear diรซlectric

โƒ—๐ƒ=๐œ–โƒ—๐„
