Types of roundedness

There are two main types of rounding:

  1. Protrusive — With protruding, tube-like lips. Typically represented as ‹◌ʷ›.
  2. Compressed — With the corners of the mouth horizontally draw together. Typically represented as ‹◌ᵝ›.

Note the transcription methods outlined above are not part of the IPA standard.
