Polynomial ring

Degree of a polynomial

Let 𝑓(π‘₯) βˆˆπ‘…[π‘₯] be a polynomial. The degree deg⁑𝑓(π‘₯) is the largest exponent of π‘₯ with nonzero coΓ«fficient in 𝑓(π‘₯). This makes 𝑅[π‘₯] a β„•βˆ’βˆž-graded ring, since

deg⁑(𝑓(π‘₯)⋅𝑔(π‘₯))=(deg⁑𝑓(π‘₯))(deg⁑𝑔(π‘₯)).

Properties

  1. If 𝑅 is an integral domain and 𝑓(π‘₯) has 𝑛 distinct solutions, then deg⁑𝑓(π‘₯) β‰₯𝑛.
Proof of 1

Let 𝑓(π‘₯) βˆˆπ‘…[π‘₯] and suppose π‘Ž1,…,π‘Žπ‘› are distinct solutions of 𝑓(π‘₯). It follows from the polynomial factor theorem that

(π‘₯βˆ’π‘Ž1)β‹―(π‘₯βˆ’π‘Žπ‘›)βˆ£π‘“(π‘₯)

whence 𝑓(π‘₯) has degree at least 𝑛, proving ^P1,
