Metrics on spacetime
There are three principal metrics in flat (i.e. Minkowski) spacetime. The first two are variant depending on observer (the reference frame):
- Space interval — The distance between two points is given by the well known pythagorean theorem
√ ( 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 1 ) 2 + ( 𝑦 2 − 𝑦 1 ) 2 + ( 𝑧 2 − 𝑧 1 ) 2 - Time interval* — The time between points is given by
𝑡 2 − 𝑡 1
The invariant metric on is the spacetime interval:
- Spacetime interval — Given by
( Δ 𝑠 ) 2 = ( Δ 𝑑 ) 2 − ( Δ 𝑡 ) 2
