Metrics on spacetime

There are three principal metrics in flat (i.e. Minkowski) spacetime. The first two are variant depending on observer (the reference frame):

  1. Space interval — The distance between two points is given by the well known pythagorean theorem (𝑥2𝑥1)2+(𝑦2𝑦1)2+(𝑧2𝑧1)2.
  2. Time interval* — The time between points is given by 𝑡2 𝑡1.

The invariant metric on is the spacetime interval:

  1. Spacetime interval — Given by (Δ𝑠)2 =(Δ𝑑)2 (Δ𝑡)2
