Metrics on Minkowski spacetime

Spacetime interval

The spacetime interval is defined as1

where ๐œ‚ =(๐œ‚๐œ‡๐œˆ) is the Minkowski metric

๐œ‚=โŽกโŽข โŽข โŽข โŽขโŽฃโˆ’1000010000100001โŽคโŽฅ โŽฅ โŽฅ โŽฅโŽฆ

Invariance

The interval has the important property that it is invariant for all inertial frames, i.e. any two intertial observers agree on the spacetime interval between events.

Footnotes

  1. The sign of (ฮ”๐‘ )2 is a not very universal convention โ€” it is also common to see (ฮ”๐‘ )2 =(๐‘ฮ”๐‘ก)2 โˆ’(ฮ”๐‘Ÿ)2, which is the convention endorsed by PHYS1002. The order used here appears in @emamCovariantPhysicsClassical2021. In very old publications, (ฮ”๐‘ )2 =(ฮ”๐‘Ÿ)2 +(๐‘–๐‘ฮ”๐‘ก)2 is sometimes seen, but this is considered very outdated. โ†ฉ
