The pitchfork bifurcation comes in two forms, the supercritical pitchfork bifurcation

where a stable fixed point ejects a pair of stable fixed points and become unstable; and the subcritical pitch fork bifurcation

where two unstable fixed points collide with a stable fixed point producing a single unstable fixed point. A rotational version is the Hopf bifurcation
