Work

Work is the mechanical transfer of energy due to a force acting over a displacement, i.e.

Work differs from Heat in that it does not require a temperature difference to be transferred. However, like heat, work can result in a change in temperature — stirring a cup of coffee will increase the of constituent particles and therefore increase the temperature, but it would be incorrect to say the coffee has been heated.

See Quasistatic expression for work.

The convention is positive work indicated work done by a system.
